Tritech in the News MISSISSAUGA, ON., October 28, 1999 --- Ontario is helping volunteers to work together more effectively to meet community needs, announced Minister of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation Helen Johns today. Johns presented a cheque for $100,090 to the Chinese Community Centre of Ontario (CCCO) to help fund a new Internet-based system that will benefit more than 350,000 residents of Chinese origin across the Greater Toronto area. The CCCO will work with its 65 member organizations and three local businesses on this innovative information technology project to help bring volunteers and communities together. "Use of the Internet to access and share information will have a strong and positive impact on volunteering in the Chinese community," said Johns, as she helped celebrate the official opening of the new Overseas Chinese Service Centre. "This new Web site will connect more than 3,000 volunteers, working in such areas as sport, culture, education, and services for children, seniors and women. It will also provide members of the public with an easy and efficient way to learn more about Chinese community life in our province." The Internet project is receiving technical, fundraising and other support from three local businesses: Tritech Automation Corporation, Yau's Camera and Computer Imaging Service, and Simweb Communications Canada Inc. It will feature such interactive resources as electronic bulletin boards and discussion groups where volunteers can share expertise and best practices, an online library and virtual conference rooms. Network links to other Web sites and a database of community organizations and their programs, services and locations will also be available. Funding for this Internet project is provided through the government's Volunteer@ction.online program, which assists volunteer groups partner twith the private sector and others in the community to enhance their work and effectiveness through the use of Internet technology and the World Wide Web. To date, the $13.5 million program has supported 31 projets accross Ontario, helping more than 20,000 groups to use the Internet for fundraising, online sales of good and services, volunteer recruitment, moderated public discussions and online skills training.
